Spongebob Squarepants Birthday Cake

Our son’s birthday is coming up next month, so I asked him what kind of birthday cake would he like this time. Last year, he wanted Spongebob Squarepants. Because of the childhood memories that I have of my mom making birthday cakes for me and my siblings, I want to carry-on that same tradition with my own children. I’m very amateur with my decorating skills and still have a lot to learn, but for the Spongebob Cake last year, I scoured the Internet for simple homemade inspiration, and decided on a 13×9 rectangle cake decorated as Spongebob Squarepant’s head. I requested the decorating assistance of my husband, the artist. With any of my cooking and baking, if there is a simpler way to go about doing it, I will do it!  Instead of baking a cake from scratch, I like to use a box cake mix and add in a few optional ingredients. Top it with homemade frosting, and it makes it all taste like something from a professional bakery!

For Gage’s Spongebob cake, I used white cake mix topped with homemade Buttercream Frosting from Wilton’s website. I added drops of food coloring to create the needed colors (yellow, red, blue), bought a can of Duncan Hines chocolate frosting for the brown color, and a tube of Wilton’s Black Decorating Icing for the outlines. I just have a basic Wilton Cake Decorating Set that included Disposable Decorating Bags, Quick-Change Tip Couplers, and Decorating Tips 3 and 104, which my husband used to decorate the cake. It was his 1st time decorating any cake, but with an artistic eye and a steady hand, he did an amazing job!

This year, I’m going with the LEGO them. Our son is loving LEGOs alot more lately, and it seems like it will be an easy idea to run with. Photos to come later!
